Biblical Precedence

God always confirms His word and He reminded me of two of King David's sons, both of whom conspired against him and tried to usurp his throne. (2 Samuel 3:3-4)

But it was David's son Solomon by Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:24) who God chose to become king after David and He established the throne of his kingdom forever. (1 Chronicles 22:9-10)

Anyone who conspires to circumvent God's plans are setting themselves up as an enemy of the LORD Himself and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

The nations conspire and the people plot in vain. When the kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against His anointed, the One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.

He rebukes them in His anger and terrifies them in His wrath, saying, "I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain." (Psalm 2:1-6)

God Ordains Leaders For His Purpose

God Himself appoints His chosen ones to lead, according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

His purpose will stand, and He will do all that He pleases.

From the east He summons a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfil His purpose.

What He has said, that He will bring about; what He has planned, that He will do. (Isaiah 46:10-11)

For He knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

God's Leaders Are Chosen To Do Mighty Works

God chose Noah to build an ark, to establish His covenant with and to preserve a remnant of people and animals. (Genesis 6:14-21)

God chose Abram to be a father of many nations and kings would come from him. (Genesis 17:4-5)

God chose Moses to send him to Pharaoh to bring His people the Israelites out of Egypt. (Exodus 3:10)

God chose Joshua to lead the people into the Promised Land after Moses' death. (Numbers 27:23)

God chose Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem's walls. (Nehemiah 2:4)

God Prepared Good Works In Advance

God chose David to rescue His people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies. (2 Samuel 3:18)

God chose Solomon to build His house and His courts. (1 Chronicles 28:6)

God chose Cyrus to rebuild His city and set His exiles free from Babylonian captivity. (Isaiah 45:18)

God chose Esther for the deliverance of all the Jews in Persia (Esther 4:14) from Haman's conspiracy to kill them (Esther 3:8).

God's chosen ones are God's handiwork, created to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

The Heart of A Leader

God's blessing is dependant upon keeping His commands in order to do everything He wants (Acts 13:22).

Saul's kingdom did not endure because he had not kept the LORD's commands so the LORD sought out a man after his own heart (David) and appointed him ruler of his people. (1 Samuel 13:14)

Whilst David wasn't perfect, he walked in obedience to God and kept His decrees and commands. (1 Kings 3:14)

He walked before God faithfully with integrity of heart and uprightness. (1 Kings 9:4)

David's heart was fully devoted to the LORD (1 Kings 11:4-6) and he reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. (2 Samuel 8:15)

Absalom Used By God As A Rod of Correction

David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not failed to keep any of the LORD's commands all the days of his life - except in the case of Uriah the Hittite who he had killed so he could take his wife, Bathsheba. (1 Kings 15:5)

God told David that out of his own household He was going to bring calamity on him and that before his very eyes, He would take his wives and give them to one who was close to him, and he would sleep with them in broad daylight.

David killed Uriah in secret, but God told him that he would do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.

Even though David recognised that he had sinned against the LORD and was repentant, he had shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to him with Bathsheba would die.

God used Absalom as a rod of correction in fulfilment of His prophecy and the child that Bathsheba had borne to David died. (2 Samuel 12:11-18)

Absalom's Conspiracy To Usurp The Throne

In the course of time, Absalom, David's third son (2 Samuel 3:3), provided himself with a chariot and horses and with 50 men to run ahead of him.

He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate.

Whenever anyone from the tribes of Israel came with a complaint to be placed before the king, Absalom, told them their claims were valid, but that there was no representative of the king to hear them.

He would add that if only he were appointed judge in the land then everyone who had a complaint or case could come to him and he would see that they received justice.

Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, he would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him, so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel. (2 Samuel 15:1-6)

Absalom's Conspiracy Gained Strength

At the end of 4 years, Absalom asked the king to let him go to Hebron and fulfil a vow he made to the LORD, which was to worship Him in Hebron.

King David told him to go in peace, so he went.

Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel telling them that as soon as they heard the sound of the trumpets, they were to say 'Absalom is king in Hebron.'

200 men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom, invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.

Absalom also sent for Ahithopel, David's counsellor and the conspiracy gained strength as his following kept on increasing. (2 Samuel 15:7-12)

King David Notifed of Absalom's Conspiracy

A messenger came and told David that the hearts of the people of Israel were with his son, Absalom.

Then David told all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem that they must flee, leave immediately and move quickly, or none of them would escape from him.

King David's officials told him that they were ready to do whatever he chose and he set out with his entire household; leaving 10 concubines to take care of the palace.

Then all his men marched past him, with all the Kerethites and Pelethites; and the 600 Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath.

The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. (2 Samuel 15:13-23)

Looking To God For Guidance

Zadok the priest was there, too, and the Levites were carrying the ark of the covenant of God.

They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.

Then the king told Zadok to take the ark of God back into the city and that if he found favour in the LORD's eyes, He would bring him back, but if He was not pleased with him, then David was ready for God to do to him whatever seemed good to Him.

King David checked Zadok's understanding and told him to go back to the city with his blessing, taking his son Ahimaaz with him, and also Abiathar's son Jonathan.

So Zadok and Abiathar took the art of God back to Jerusalem, together with their two sons, and stayed there. (2 Samuel 15:24-29)

Turning The Enemies Counsel Into Foolishness

David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went; his head was covered and he was barefoot.

All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up.

Now David had been told that Ahithophel (his counselor) was among Absalom's conspirators, so David prayed that the LORD turned his counsel into foolishness. (2 Samuel 15:30-31)

The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the people. (Psalm 33:10)

Though they plot evil and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed (Psalm 21:11)

Spies In The Camp

When David arrived at the summit, Hushai, David's confidant, was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust on his head.

David told Hushai that if he went with him, he would be a burden to him, but if he returned to the city and told Absalom he would be his servant, then he could help him by frustrating Ahithophel's advice.

He then told Hushai to tell Zakok and Abiathar anything he heard in the king's palace.

He also told him that their two sons Ahimaaz, son of Zakok and Jonathan, son of Abiathar, were there with him and to send them to him with anything he heard.

So Hushai arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom was entering the city. (2 Samuel 15:32-37)

God's Purpose Will Stand

God, who makes known the end from the beginning, whose purpose will stand and who will do all that He pleases (Isaiah 46:10), had set everything and everyone in motion years before.

Those who helped David included Mephibosheth, the lame son of Jonathan, who David showed kindness to by restoring to him all the land that belonged to his grandfather Saul and he ate at David's table like one of his sons.

Jonathan was King Saul's son; David had given him a high rank in his army and Jonathan became one in spirit with him, David loved him as himself and made a covenant with him. (1 Samuel 18:1-5)

Ziba used to be Saul's steward and he and his sons and his servants farmed the land for Mephibosheth and brought in the crops, so that his previous master's grandson would be provided for (2 Samuel 9:6-11) and Ziba said he would do whatever David commanded him.

When God makes a divine appointment, the enemy cannot win as no weapon forged against them will prevail, and they will refute every tongue that accuses them; this is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from Him. (Isaiah 54:17)

The LORD's Provision

When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba, the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him.

He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with 200 loaves of bread, 100 cakes of raisins, 100 cakes of figs and a skin of wine.

King David asked Ziba why he had brought these and Ziba told him that the donkeys were for the king's household to ride on, the bread and fruit were for the men to eat, and the wine was to refresh those who became exhausted in the wilderness. (2 Samuel 16:1-2)

God will meet all our needs (Philippians 4:19) and He is able to bless us abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that we need, we will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

Never will God leave us; never will He forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5)

Absalom's Conspiracy Failed

David's son, his own flesh and blood, was trying to kill him and David hoped that the LORD would look upon his misery and restore to him His covenant blessing.

Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, Ahithophel was with him and Hushai told Absalom that he would serve him, just as he served his father.

Absalom asked Ahithophel for his advice and he told him to sleep with his father's concubines whom he left to take care of the palace.

Then all Israel would hear that he had made himself obnoxious to his father, and the hands of everyone with him would be more resolute.

So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel (2 Samuel 16:11-22), fulfilling God's prophecy in retribution for David's sin with Bathsheba and Uriah the Hittite.

Ahithophel's Advice Frustrated

Ahithophel advised Absalom to choose 12,000 men and set out that night in pursuit of David to attack him while he was weary and weak and strike him with terror, then all the people with him would flee.

He advised to strike down only the king and bring all the people back to him as the death of David would mean the return of all the people unharmed.

This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel but Absalom also wanted to hear what Hushai had to say.

Hushai advised Absalom to let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba be gathered to him, with Absalom leading them into battle, attacking David wherever he may be found, leaving neither he nor any of his men left alive.

Absalom and all the men of Israel said that the advice of Hushai was better than that of Ahithophel for the LORD had determined to frustrate the good of advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom. (2 Samuel 17:1-14)

David Warned of Absalom's Plans

Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, about what had been advised and told them to send a message at once to David.

Ahimaaz and Jonathan went to inform King David to set out and cross the river at once and by daybreak no-one was left who had not crossed the Jordan. (2 Samuel 17:15-22)

Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God.

That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel's advice. (2 Samuel 16:23)

When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey, set out for his house, put his house in order and then hanged himself. (2 Samuel 17:23)

Two Camps - A Nation Divided

David went to Mahanaim and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.

Mahanaim means two camps or two companies which is exactly what happened to Israel as a result of Absalom's rebellion which divided the nation.

Esau was the one who gave Mahanaim it's name as it was the place where he was met by the angels of God when he was preparing to meet Esau after many years estranged. (Genesis 32:2-3)

Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab and Amasa was the son of Jether, an Ishmaelite who had married Abigail, the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab.

At various strategic points, God had people in position who helped King David, and the two camps were stationed in different parts.

Provision & Protection

When David came to Mahanaim, exactly like before, more of his comrades came to his aid and brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery.

They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils, honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows' milk for David and his people to eat for they said they had become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness. (2 Samuel 17:24-29)

David mustered the men who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and sent out his troops.

King David told the troops that he will surely march out with them but the men told him not to and that it would be better for him to give them support from the city, so he stood beside the gate which all his men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands.

The king commanded his men to be gentle with Absalom for his sake and all the troops heard the orders concerning him.

God's Hand

David's army marched out of the city to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim, which means to be fruitful.

Israel's troops were routed by David's men and the casualties that day were great - 20,000 men.

The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest swelled up more men that day than the sword.

Now Absalom happened to meet David's men.

He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom's hair got caught in the tree and he was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.

Absalom's Death

When one of the men saw what had happened, he told Joab and Joab asked why he didn't strike him to the ground, saying he would have had to give him 10 shekels of silver and a warrior's belt.

But the man replied that even if 1,000 shekels were weighed out into his hands, he would not lay a hand on the king's son, as per the king's command.

So Joab took 3 javelins and plunged them into Absalom's heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree and 10 of Joab's armour-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him.

Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and the troops stopped pursuing Israel, for Joab halted them.

They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up a large heap of rocks over him and all the Israelites fled to their homes.

Adonijah's Conspiracy To Usurp The Throne

Following on from Absalom, without David's knowledge, Adonijah, David's 4th son (2 Samuel 3:4) also put himself forward declaring that he would be king and proceeded to make preparations. (1 Kings 1:5-10)

Nathan the prophet informed Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, and reaffirming his oath, King David said that as surely as the LORD lives, he would surely carry out that very day what he swore to her by the LORD, the God of Israel, that Solomon would be king after him, and he would sit on his throne in his place.

In accordance with the LORD's wishes, King David appointed Solomon, Benaiah blessed him and Zadok the priest anointed him and all the people rejoiced greatly, so that the the ground shook with the sound. (1 Kings 1:28-40)

A while later, still believing that the kingdom was his and that all Israel looked to him as their king, Adonijah conspired again, this time asking for King Solomon's father's concubine Abishag as his wife.

Adonijah may as well have asked for the kingdom and King Solomon swore by the LORD that Adonijah would be put to death that day, and he gave orders to Benaiah, commander of the army, to strike him down and he died.

The LORD's Decree

The LORD decreed that His chosen are His sons, and He is their father.

If we ask Him, He will make the nations our inheritance, the ends of the earth our possession, we will break the wicked with a rod of iron and dash them to pieces like pottery.

God warned kings and rulers of the earth to be wise. They must serve the LORD with fear and celebrate His rule with trembling.

Kiss His son, or He will be angry and their way will lead to their destruction, for God's wrath can flare up in a moment.

Blessed are all who take refuge in Him. (Psalm 2:7-12)

Solomon Chosen By God

When Solomon was born, the LORD loved him, and sent a message by the prophet Nathan; so David named him Jedidiah (2 Samuel 12:25) meaning beloved of the LORD. (2 Samuel 12:25)

Solomon was chosen by God from birth and although young and inexperienced when his time to rule came, King David made extensive preparations before his death for the house of the LORD to be built. (1 Chronicles 22:5)

Then David charged Solomon to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel and he told him the revelation he had received from the LORD concerning him.

King David blessed Solomon saying may the LORD be with him, and may he have success and build the house of the LORD, as God said he would and may He give him discretion and understanding when He puts him in command over Israel, so that he may keep the law of the LORD, then Solomon would have success. (1 Chronicles 22:8-13)

God was with Solomon and would not fail him or forsake him until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD was finished. (1 Chronicles 28:20)

Solomon's Throne Established

Solomon established himself firmly over his kingdom, for the LORD his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.

Then Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon, for God's tent of meeting was there and they inquired of the LORD, with Solomon offering a thousand burnt offerings.

That night God appeared to Solomon and told him to ask for whatever he wanted Him to give him and Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge, that he may lead God's people over whom God had made him king.

Since this was his heart's desire and he had not asked for wealth, possessions or honour, nor for the death of his enemies or a long life, wisdom and knowledge would be given to him and He would also give him wealth, possessions and honour, such as no king who was before him ever had and none after him would have.

The Way of The LORD

As can be clearly seen, the leaders who followed the way of the LORD followed His laws and commands.

Their hearts were fully devoted to the LORD and they recognised that God was the source of all blessings.

They did right in the eyes of the LORD and they did right by people.

When they made mistakes they repented and God restored them or shepherded them with a rod of correction by way of retribution.

Those who tried to cheat the system, conspire against God's anointed and take what didn't belong to them, died.

By Their Fruits We Will Recognise Them

We are to watch out for false prophets, they come to us in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

By their fruit we will recognise them as every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Thus, by their fruit you will recognise them. (Matthew 7:15-20)

God's Will WILL Be Done

Whilst many people say that they believe in God, they support and live by un-Godly works that is against scripture.

Abortion, transgenderism, transhumanism, the removal of cornerstones, manipulation of the truth, pride, God hates these things.

Such things displease the LORD and show contempt for God's good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

God changes times and seasons; He deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. (Daniel 2:21)

God's will will undoubtedly be done.

Praise The LORD

Praise be to the LORD, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.

Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours.

Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honour come from You; You are the ruler of all things. In Your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name, amen. (1 Chronicles 29:10-13)
